Reaction Vol. 4

review by David Levine

Make your own record! Or at least have your song on one. That's what's up with Reaction C.D.'s Volume 4: the best unsigned bands in New York, as compiled by Phillip Foxman and Thom Jack. They get the tapes or see the bands and the bands pool their funds for the greater good. Isn't that communal? This C.D. is your ticket to N.Y.C.'s Lower East Side club scene. It's like cruising Ave. A, walking into a bar and checking out the band. You don't like that one? Switch to the next track. No hangover in the morning and no unwanted piercings you were too drunk to remember. Plus you save all that money on the door.

There are some very cool bands on this CD and it's very eclectic (the most over used word in my reviews), from Country to Techno, Rock, Funk, Folk, and combinations of the above. Cuts I like are Little Green's Cheatin Is A Two Way Street (163k .au), Power Country Funk with a twist, and Prime 8's Here It Comes, (170k .au) acoustic Folk Rock with a unforgettable hook. Also, check out Thom Jack's tribute to Phil Spector, Veil of Tears, (183k .au) or Play's infectious groove on Knock Me Over. (157k .au) There are other good tunes on this disc, but kids, it's not in the stores. To get it, you have to write to Reaction C.D.s, 49 Charles Street, Suite 2, New York N.Y. 10014 or Call 212 741-3198.
